Seven-year NBA veteran and self-proclaimed video game enthusiast Jonas Jerebko has purchased the esports franchise Renegades.

Jerebko inherited a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive team that participated in the inaugural year of the Turner Broadcasting and Twitch broadcast ELeague and has already moved to acquire a Call of Duty Team to expand the Renegades’ reach in the growing esports industry.

Jerebko follows many other mainstream athletes, particularly basketball players, who are beginning to play an active and important role in esports. Recent data indicates that the esports industry is worth roughly $900 million and growing.

In December 2015, three time NBA champion Rick Fox bought an esports team previously known as Gravity Gaming and renamed it Echo Fox. The team focuses on the gaming franchise League of Legends.

In March, retired NBA player Shaquille O’Neal, along with baseball players Alex Rodriguez and Jimmy Rollins invested in NRG Esports, which has esports teams participating in the aforementioned League of Legends and Counter-Strike video game competitions.

Gordon Hayward, another current NBA player, recently told me that he is also looking into the esports business.

“I’m looking into partnering with some people in the business side of esports. I think there’s all kinds of money to be made in the industry,” said Hayward, who says he is a big fan of League of Legends competitions.

Jerebko’s next task as newly minted owner of Renegades is to reorganize the leadership of the organization. He says that he will be hiring esports industry experts to join Renegades in the near future.

Jerebko spent five years in the NBA playing for the Detroit Pistons. The Renegades esports franchise is based in Detroit and sometimes referred to as the Detroit Renegades.

Terms of the acquisition of Renegades by Jerebko have not been disclosed.
